Ramadhan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is the Islamic month of fasting. Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and indulging in anything that is in excess or ill-natured from dawn until sunset.
During Ramadhan, Muslims would get up before dawn to eat Sahur (pre-dawn meal) and later perform the fajr prayer. The fasting period starts from the call for fajr prayer until the fourth prayer of the day, Maghrib (at sunset). They will perform the Maghrib prayer only after breaking the fast (Iftar).
Fasting is meant to teach Muslims about the values of patience, modesty and spirituality. Ramadhan is a time for Muslims to fast for the sake of God, and to offer more prayers than usual. They ask for forgiveness of past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. Fasting helps one to practice self-discipline, self-control and sacrifice, empathy for those who are less fortunate and also to cleanse the inner soul. Many people don't realise that fasting play a role on our health too.
